Forest ticks are found on forest floor. They inhabit the leaf litter. Tick borne viruses like KFDV are dangerous. Termites from forest roens or termite hills forage on this leaf litter infested with ticks. Inside this litter is converted into a compost called Fungus Comb or Olamo. The ticks are destroyed in the biodegradation process by the powerful enzymes of Termitomyces fungus cultivated on the compost by the termites.
The viruses are also destroyed. Thus litter removal is important. But more important is requirement of fresh spores from mushrooms to keep the fungus vigorous.
If all the mushrooms are harvested the spores wont be available. Termites also consume the decomposed mushrooms for nutrition. They carry spores and pieces of dead mushrooms inside at night
They sow the spores on new compost and the vigoour of fungus is maintained. After monsoon when litterfall increases the new fungus efficiently degrades it.
Upto 350 kg of forest litter per mound is processed per year
If termites dont get mushrooms then this process is halted
The litter would pile up
The ticks would multiply
The monkeys would get infected
The monkeys come in contact with humans
Humans get KFDV
And other tick borne hemorrhagic fevers
